At every gift-giving event (birthdays and Christmas), I ask for books. My mother, being the amazing woman that she is, loves surprising me with books on my wish list and, since she loves Elle Kennedy's adult series, she never fails to give me Elle's latest new adult book. That means I got The Mistake for Christmas and did not wait to a second to lock myself away from the world and get lost in the mind of yet another sexy, irresistible hockey player.
Having fallen for his best friend's girlfriend, collegiate hockey player John Logan will do anything, and anyone, to forget about her. A chance encounter with freshman Grace Ivers throws Logan for a loop and he finds himself wanting to go back for more, a feeling he hasn't felt for years. Grace wants her freshman year of college to be much more fulfilling than it has been, especially when she realizes that her life has been centered around her high school best friend and not herself. When he drops into her life, Grace is intrigued by Logan, but finds it hard to believe a guy like Logan would ever be interested in a girl like her. It turns out that Logan is dealing with some demons and, when he faces the possibility of losing Grace, he'll do anything to show her that he's worth everything.
Ahhhhhhh freaking John Logan. I fell in love with his character thanks to the small glimpse we got of him in The Deal and knew I would love him immensely in this book. I was just so heart broken when he was watching Hannah and Garrett together and longing for what they had. You so deserve true love, Logan! You do! I was rooting for Logan this entire book, especially when he screwed up royally with Grace and had to grovel to make it up to her. Nothing is more adorable than a super confident, cocky, arrogant, and gorgeous man doing all he can to win the girl.
The thing that surprised me about this book was how Grace didn't fall googly, head-over-heels for Logan right away. He really had to work to be with her and Grace seemed okay if they didn't work out. It was refreshing when the girl wasn't obsessing over the guy, but rather the guy was obsessing over the girl. It made Logan that much more endearing and their relationship so much more realistic. They met and were around each other for about a week, but then a whole summer went by before they saw each other again. It was great to see how the characters actually did develop and how time passed in their relationship. The pacing was absolutely perfect and this book kept me on my toes while spacing the steamy scenes out so that there weren't too many but they definitely weren't lacking.
Overall, Logan was the cutest, most perfect hockey player protagonist ever. While The Deal is still my favorite of the series because I just loved both Hannah and Garrett, I fell for Logan's character from page one. I didn't click as much with Grace, but I still enjoyed her character and how she wasn't the cliched virgin college girl. Her character was refreshing and pulled out the best from the playboy turned romantic John Logan. If you haven't yet, you absolutely have to pick up Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series. She gives you insanely sexy hockey players who show their soft side and capture the heart of every reader who cracks open the book.
